Project goal
The Crosscover is a pedestrian crossing designed by Heijmans to improve the safety of pedestrians on crossings. A special fluorescent coating is used to create a pattern in-between the white lines. Heijmans asked me to research what impact the Crosscover has on the traffic situation. This research was focused on three aspects: safety, attention value and experience. The goal of this research was to gain insights into the user experience of the Crosscover.

Client
I did my internship at the Heijmans’ Department of Infrastructure, at the sub-department Commerce, Marketing and Innovation (CMO), where I was part of the innovation team, mostly focusing on product development. The innovations created here are all connected to infrastructure.
-
Process
I started with a PACT analysis to get a better understanding of the concept, by approaching it from different perspectives. I analysed which people are involved, what their activities are, in what context the Crosscover will be used and what the role of the Crosscover can be in pedestrian safety. I decided to use a combination of Likert scales and the User Experience Questionnaire for the user study. The study was conducted at the Spark Makersfestival in 's Hertogenbosch.
-
Result
The results from the user study could be used for marketing purposes and to further develop the product.

Other activities
Before a product like Crosscover can be put on the market, several tests have to be performed to ensure the product meets all the requirements and regulations. During my internship, I was involved in the validation phase of the Crosscover. Furthermore, I helped with the realisation of the Lightbarrier, in Parkstad Limburg. For a few days, I was part of the construction workers' team.
These pictures show part of the product testing process. The paint was applied to tiles (left image) to test the adherence (right image).
