Scoliosis

Focus points:

  • Project goal

Poor compliance in brace treatment for idiopathic scoliosis is a well-known problem. Due to poor compliance, the optimal outcome of the treatment is not always achieved. Besides, the influence of psychological issues caused by brace-wearing is still insufficiently understood. This area needs more attention to be able to support patients through motivational design. I researched how insights into the mental state of a patient on a day-to-day basis can contribute to guidelines for the design of a motivational tool. The focus of this project was on user research, research for design, and data analysis.

  • Process

This project started by doing in-depth literature research and expert interviews. After determining the research question, I designed a diary to collect data. By combining three research methods: a questionnaire, a diary study and a semi-structured interview I collected in-depth data.

  • Result

I used the results from my study to create a set of design guidelines for the design of a motivational tool. The new insights contribute to empirical research and innovation in the field of patient compliance in brace treatment for idiopathic scoliosis.
